A few weeks ago, I told you how much money you need if you want to travel to New Zealand and not change the continent, Oceania; in this case, I will bring you another destination which is also famous for its high price, compared to other countries: Australia. That way, you can judge for yourself whether the budget you need looks affordable or not. If you don’t think so, you can explore options for saving money in the country by looking at an entry we published a while back.
But before making a decision, let’s take a detailed look at how much it costs you to travel to Australia.
The official currency of Australia is the Australian Dollar (symbol: A$; ISO: AUD), which has been in circulation in the country since 1966. It is the official currency of the Commonwealth of Australia, including the Australian Antarctic Territory, Christmas Islands, Cocos Islands, Heard Islands and McDonald’s, and the Norfolk Islands, as well as the independent Pacific states of Kiribati, Nauru, and Tuvalu.
Currently, notes and coins of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 Australian dollars 1 and 2 dollars, and 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents are in circulation.
To travel in this currency to that country, you can exchange it for your money at any of the Global Exchange offices you can find worldwide (in some countries, even online). In addition, in this country, you can do it at a discount of 15%.
Transport
You can get around Australia using transport: car, motorbike, bus, train, plane… But if you are adventurous, you can also do it by motorhome or van. In fact, on this blog, we told you some time ago how to rent and visit the country most independently and curiously. Plus, here’s what you have to pay for:
- Small car rental, for one day: 60 Australian dollars / 45 US dollars / 41 euros. Several international rental companies, like Hertz or Avis, and some websites with last-minute deals, like Carhire, Drive Now, or Webjet. Of course, remember that you drive on the left in this country.
- One liter of gasoline: 1.25 Australian dollars / 0.9 US dollars / 0.86 euros.
- One ticket for urban transport (train and bus): between 2.4 and 3.5 Australian dollars, depending on the distance on the bus and the space on the train / 1.8-2.6 US dollars / 1.6-2.4 euros.
- Taxi from the airport to Sydney city center (20-minute ride): 30 Australian dollars / 22.5 US dollars / 21 euros.
- Eat and drYou; you will find a wide variety of dining options in Australia due to the country’s influence on other countries. If you’re one of the more traditional ones, you can sample the legs, meat pies from England, or yabbies, a type of freshwater prawn. And if you’re one of the riskiest, you won’t be able to leave without trying kangaroo or shark soup. And, in general, here’s what you have to pay:
- Menu at hamburger restaurant: 11 Australian dollars / 8.2 US dollars / 7.6 euros.
- Meals in mid-priced restaurants: 15 Australian dollars / 11.2 US dollars / 10 euros.
- Meals in mid-priced restaurants: 25-50 Australian dollars / 19-38 US dollars / 17-34 euros.
- Beer at the bar: 7 Australian dollars / 5.3 US dollars / 4.8 euros.
- Coffee at the bar: 4 Australian dollars / 3 US dollars / 2.7 euros.
- Buy a loaf of bread at the supermarket: 2 Australian dollars / 1.5 US dollars / 1.3 euros.
- Buy a kilo of tomatoes at the supermarket: 5.51 Australian dollars / 4 US dollars / 3.8 euros.
Accommodation
The price of accommodation you choose will depend on the comfort you seek and the region of the country (and even the city itself) you are in. I left some references on how much they cost:
- Double room in the mid-priced hotel, including breakfast, near Sydney city centre: 118 Australian dollars / 88.7 US dollars / 81 euros.
- Bed in a dormitory in the center of Sydney, in a room for four people, mixed: 30.5 Australian dollars / 23 US dollars / 21 euros.
- Rent a 45sqm flat in Sydney average area (price per month): 1,912 Australian dollars / 1,438 US dollars / 1,314 euros.
Enjoy free time
In a cosmopolitan city like Australia, the culture and nightlife you will find will be extraordinary. So, if you are one of those who prefer to invest in this during your trip, choose what you will spend your budget on because here is what you have to pay:
- Cinema ticket: 20 Australian dollars / 15 US dollars / 13.7 euros.
- Drinks at the bar or club in the evening: 9 Australian dollars / 6.7 US dollars / 6 euros.
- Pack of cigarettes: 26 Australian dollars / 19.5 US dollars / 17.9 euros.
- Theatre ticket: 70 Australian dollars (a ticket to the Opera House, for example, usually costs about 66 Australian dollars) / 52 US dollars / 48 euros.
- Entry to the large museum: 15 Australian dollars / 11 US dollars / 10 euros. You can also find many with free admission and others where you can get them on certain days.
In summary, the estimated cost for one person per day, assuming you are travelling in a rental car, sleeping in a hotel and doing some of the recreational activities mentioned, is around AUD 184 (138 US dollars / 126 euros). If you travel by public transport, and if we make a round trip, it will cost about 164 Australian dollars (123 US dollars / 112 euros).
The price information is adjusted to the average price, not the benchmark price.
